Defense Information Systems Network (DISN) – Providing Mission Critical Communications

ISSUE
The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) needed to provide secure access for C2 and mission critical communications for the Department of Defense (DoD). The Defense Information System Network (DISN) was created to provide Transmission, Video, and Network Management Services for the DoD.

SOLUTION
DSA provided the security solutions for the DISN Switched/Bandwidth Management System – CONUS

Specifically, DSA provided:

  • Security Architecture

  • End to end network security engineering and implementation

  • Certification and Accreditation services

  • Physical and personnel security

  • Security awareness training

  • All phases of security testing

  • Life-cycle security support

  • DoD approved network security plan with monitoring and incident reporting

  • Security inspections

  • Risk analysis inspections and recommendations to improve security at all DISN Bandwidth Manager site locations

  • Disaster Recovery and Continuity of Operations Planning

RESULTS

  • DISA achieved DAA concurrence to commission and operate 35 deployed Bandwidth Managers.

  • 3,500 Security Audits conducted without significant findings

  • DSA developed a secure architecture.

  • DSA ensured secure connections between home bases and the warfighter.

  • No major security incidents have occurred.
