DSA Elects Former GSA Deputy Commissioner to Its Federal Advisory Board President of The Self Group Joins Elite Group
March 28, 2005 – Frances R. Pierce, President and CEO, Data Systems Analysts (DSA) announced the election of Charles A. Self, President of The Self Group, L.L.C., to the company’s Federal Advisory Board of Directors.
Self established The Self Group, a consulting practice focused on helping companies grow their information technology business in the Federal sector, in August 2003, upon his retirement from the Federal government after 34 years of public service. In his last government position, he served as the Deputy Commissioner of the General Services Administration’s (GSA) Federal Technology Service, a $7 billion government enterprise comprised of 1,500 associates who provided private sector telecommunications and information technology (IT) products, services, and solutions to Federal agencies.
Self is highly respected in GSA and throughout the Federal government and the private-sector, according to DSA’s Pierce. “We are delighted Charlie is joining our Federal Advisory Board. He provides another important dimension to the already impressive knowledge base and skills of our existing Board members .”
Self began his government career as an Air Force Lieutenant and quickly rose to the rank of Captain. He transferred into civilian public service with the US Air Force, and later with the Department of Veterans Affairs, before joining the General Services Administration in 1985.
Self received a BS degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a Masters in Mathematics from St. Mary’s University. He spent a year at Ohio State University working on a doctorate degree in computer science. He served as an officer in the US Air Force from 1968 to 1972, leaving as a Captain.
Self has received numerous awards for his work in establishing and operating “intra-governmental businesses” and promoting and fostering the concept of entrepreneurial government. He received GSA’s Meritorious Service Award, the agency’s second highest award, for his work with the Federal Systems Integration and Management Center (FEDSIM).
Other members of DSA’s FAB include David Borland, former Deputy to the Army’s Chief Information Officer (CIO/G6); Edward A. Hart, former Deputy Director of the National Security Agency (NSA) and current president, Hart Enterprises, LLC; and, Tom L. Hewitt, founder, Federal Sources, Inc.
