TREVOSE, PA, Dec 6, 2004 – The International Eye Foundation (IEF) elected Frances R. Pierce, chairman, president & CEO, Data Systems Analysts, to its Board of Directors.
IEF, headquartered in Kensington, Maryland, is dedicated to the promotion of peace through the prevention of blindness. With more than 40 years of experience, its mission is to help people see and to prevent blindness. The organization is committed to training and eliminating the four leading causes of blindness, including cataracts, trachoma, onchocerciasis (river blindness) and childhood blindness through its SightReach® Prevention and other programs, especially in the developing world. The World Health Organization’s estimate of 45 million blind and 135 million with low vision worldwide, 90% living in developing countries, keeps the organization mindful that new and innovative ways of reaching people must be found.
“I am honored to be elected to the board of directors of the IEF”, said Pierce. “I join an illustrious group of people who are committed to preventing the diseases that needlessly underlie the enormous gap between the developing and the developed world. There are solutions. We need appropriate attention and resources.”
IEF’s SightReach Management and SightReach Surgical programs are improving the quality of cataract surgery in India, Egypt, Malawi, Tanzania, El Salvador and Guatemala and enhancing productivity of surgeons to increase the number of operations they conduct each year.
