The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children Selects Security Consultant for Mission Critical Network Data Systems Analysts Chosen

Fairfax, Va. -- September 12, 2002 -- The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) has turned to Data Systems Analysts (DSA) for solutions to secure its mission critical network.

Few web sites require such urgent, day-to-day monitoring. The safety of missing children could be jeopardized because of an information technology crisis - from a missed tip, to an abduction alert, to a breakdown in disseminating photographs to law enforcement entities. As the premier national resource center since 1984 for recovering missing children and preventing abuse, NCMEC has worked on over 83,500 cases and helped to recover more than 66,800 children.

According to DSA Vice President, "DSA has been contracted to provide a business continuity plan to ensure that mission critical systems are free from vulnerability and deficiency.

"DSA also will deliver a warm site (a mirror of the main site) for NCMEC at an alternate location where tapes of recent data will be saved to protect the network. In a time of unexpected trouble, NCMEC will be able to re-establish operations at the alternate site."

The Center's selection of DSA follows a recent comprehensive evaluation conducted by DSA to assess the organization's unusual network requirements to meet the multitude of challenges involved in child protection, and to project future needs. Using its sophisticated new tool, NetScope™, all vital aspects of the network infrastructure needed to improve the web site's technical capabilities were studied, including firewalls and software reconfiguration.

By developing a network performance baseline, the bandwidth use at different times of the day was appraised to uncover bottlenecks. Vulnerabilities that could cause harm were rated on a hierarchical scale of impact.

As a result of the NetScope™ assessment and a subsequent comprehensive report, DSA established the groundwork for a continuity-of-operations plan as well as comprehensive information technology policies to ensure compliance with the secure use of the infrastructure.

"The work we do for NCMEC will allow them to meet mission needs to communicate securely with the public and support law enforcement while keeping out those who might want to harm NCMEC's efforts," says DSA's program manager.
