DSA Hosts U. S. Congressman Rob Andrews
Pennsauken, NJ, January 15, 2001---Congressman Robert L. Andrews (D-NJ) joined employees and friends of DSA at the Pennsauken office on January 12 for lunch and conversation about the "Digital Divide", the gap in access to computers and technology between America's rich and poor, majority and minority.
Offering DSA as a model company for helping to bridge this "divide", and commending the Company's progressive hiring practices, the Congressman emphasized the importance of providing computer technology skills and training to all children across all economic and social lines. "Not only is this situation just plain wrong", said the Congressman. "If 20% of children are not achieving, if they lack access, we won't grow as a nation and you won't grow as a company."
Congressman Andrews has met with nearly 500 businesses in the past year and half in an attempt to learn more about the needs of South Jersey businesses. Increasingly, he has learned that the one shared concern of these businesses is their need for a qualified and highly skilled labor force.
DSA has become involved in tackling the problem. President Pierce chairs the Scholarship Committee of the non-profit organization, Open Door, which helps talented young people with limited financial resources to pursue a technical education or training. DSA is one of the founding, contributing members of the group, which over the past three years has raised over $3 million for scholarships. Also, through involvement with the Secretary of the Army's National Science Center, on whose Board of Directors Ms. Pierce serves, students and teachers are encouraged to undertake hi-tech courses and curriculums.
At the conclusion of his remarks, Congressman Andrews open the discussion to questions from DSA employees about subjects of their choice.
Entering his tenth year in Congress, Rob Andrews serves on the U. S. House of Representatives' Committee on Education and the Workforce and is the Senior Ranking Democrat on the subcommittee on Employer-Employee Relations. He also serves on the Armed Services Committee and its subcommittee on Military Research and Development, as well as a Special Oversight Panel on Morale, Welfare and Recreation.
