WJLA-TV and News Channel 8

ISSUE
WJLA, the ABC affiliate in Washington DC and News Channel 8, a 24 hour cable news station broadcasting in the DC metro area, decided to operate under one roof. DSA was asked to assist with the design, integration and installation of a new state-of-the-art, combined broadcasting facility. The new facility features all digital technology and a “tapeless” environment that places more reliance than ever before on networked information technology hardware and software.

SOLUTION

• DSA was responsible for the design and build of an IT infrastructure that included a User LAN, Production LAN and Transmission LAN and spanned over 80,000 sq. ft.

• The project included acquisition and implementation of a secure core network infrastructure consisting of over 400 hosts and providing integration support for other IT and broadcast related vendors.

• DSA performed vulnerability and risk assessments and was responsible for implemented recommended mitigations.

• The WJLA/NC8 news SAN operates over a switched, fibre channel fabric, which provides 620 hours of online storage

RESULT

• WJLA / Newschannel 8 can now produce and broadcast content more efficiently and with fewer resources.

• While the level of redundancy has increased, the cost of lifecycle support has decreased dramatically.

• There are 150 WJLA/NC8 producer workstations on the production Ethernet network and the content on the News SAN is made available to these producer workstations
