Network Management System For AAMC

ISSUE
The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) serves as the accrediting body and application-processing center for over one hundred medical schools in the United States, handling approximately 35,000 applications every year. The AAMC wanted to optimize their operations by receiving and processing applications electronically and offering employees the ability to access the network from home.

SOLUTION
Network Management System
• Previous network structure prevented the AAMC from identifying and locating network vulnerabilities
    - Would not know if the network has been tampered by hackers if connected to the Internet
• Monitors the status of servers and networks
• Captures metrics on utilization and outages
• DSA established an automated reporting methodology
    - Provides weekly and monthly reports powered through Microsoft Excel
    - Includes which personnel to contact if alert conditions occur
• DSA improved network support capabilities
    - Internal and external connectivity

Remote Access Server
• Selected, installed, and launched by DSA
• DSA provided software to install on the personal computers
• DSA trained administrators and users on the remote access system

RESULT
The AAMC was able to launch electronic processing of medical school applications
• The AAMC gained the ability to report what was happening within the network
    - Better understanding of the network, its weaknesses, and how to isolate them
• Applications could be received electronically from the external environment
• 340 internal users in 2 separate buildings could communicate and process applications securely

The AAMC could provide additional work-life balance options to employees
• Up to 100 employees could access the network remotely
